Jeanice Canada Smith

Jeanice was born in West Tennessee, in a small town 7 miles north of Memphis. At an early age, she can remember drawing pictures she saw in magazines and comic books. Her interest in drawing was always strong, even as young as four years old when she drew a set of paper dolls for herself. She attended art classes taught by private instructors, such as Jan and Nancy Gosnell in Mountain Home, AR, Al Allen of Little Rock, AR, Vicki McMurry of Austin, TX, and Pat Canney and William Kalwick of Houston, TX. She earned her BFA in Fine Arts at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1982, with a double area of concentration; one in painting and the other in graphics. She also studied for her Masters of Art at the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN.

After a sixteen year career in graphics and illustration, working for companies that included Schering-Plough, Inc. of Memphis, TN, American General Insurance Co. of Houston, TX and University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, she retired in July of 1998. Since retiring, she is finally pursuing her life's dream of painting on a daily basis.

"Art has always been food for my soul and my deepest passion since I can remember. I love creating visual images on flat surfaces that speak to the viewer of my innermost thoughts and feelings, as this is my truest form of communication. My art attempts to show you, the viewer, a part of me that can only be seen through my images, without words. My loves, hates, fears, wishes, strengths, weakness' and feelings of society's conditions today are all images I attemts to put on canvas. I hope I can reach at least one viewer with every work I create."
